A Literature Review Pranayama Yogic Exercise Toward Peak Expiratory Flow Rate in Patients with Asthma

Abstract

Introduction: Asthma is a non-communicable disease with the leading cause of death in Indonesia. Non-pharmacology theraphy has developed in the community, like pranayama yoga. Pranayama yogic breathing exercises increase the parameter of peak expiratory flow rate that can control and reduce asthma attack intensity. Purpose: This literature review aim to find out pre and post effects of pranayama yogic intervention on the peak expiratory flow rate in patients with asthma. Methods: This study uses literature review methods, which search using 2 databases, Google Scholar and ResearchGate. Results: Based on the search for journal articles, 8 journals were obtained according to the criteria and after analyze it was found that in asthmatic patients there was increase peak expiration flow rate of post pranayama yoga intervention with general significant a value < 0,05. Conclusion: Pranayama yoga performed continuosly and over a long period time is useful for controlling the flow of breath, so that the mind becomes more relaxed and increases strengh of the breath muscle tonus. It affects the peak flow of expiration that slowly increases and controls the status of asthmatic in patients with asthma. Especially in Indonesia, nurses role so important to provide and manage pranayama yogic intervention as a non-pharmacological therapy that can help patients with asthma training peak expiratory flow rate power to create the highest health level.
